Learn & Play New orleans music with dirty catfish brass band!

  • Have fun learning to play music from the New Orleans brass band tradition, with one of Canada‘s premier New Orleans influenced brass bands, who are not only some of Winnipeg‘s top professional musicians, but also considered to be some of Winnipeg‘s most highly respected educators.

  • Open to students of all skill levels, ages 13-19 with a minimum of 1 year of playing experience, to help improve skill on your instrument and feel more comfortable improvising. There will be room for everyone to participate, and acquire new skills and information that will help everyone take their playing to the next level.

  • The camp runs from Monday, August 11 to Friday, August 15 from 9:00am- 3:30pm and will be held at the Winnipeg Conservatory of Music located at 1476 Portage Ave across from Polo Park. With a final concert on Friday at 3:00pm.

  • Receive instrument specific classes, along with classes focused on group improvisation & song learning, collective/group singing, group percussion/rhythm, as well as ensembles including a mass band or 2nd Line as they call it in New Orleans!

  • All music will be learned by ear, the traditional way, however, there will be music notation used in classes periodically and every student will get access to the sheet music at the end of the camp.

  • Students will be placed in either a beginner or more advanced ensemble that will learn mass band/2nd Line songs and learn how to improvise over those songs throughout the week in preparation for the final concert, which will happen on Friday, August 15th at Omands Creek Park. After the performance of both bands, everyone including faculty will form and mass band and create what could be the largest 2nd Line Winnipeg has ever seen!
